Tests You Might Have When You Get An Adult Routine Eye Examination

If you haven't had an eye exam for a long time, you should consider getting one, even if you don't have vision problems. If you've noticed your eyesight is blurry at a distance or up close, it's a good idea to get an eye examination in case you need glasses. An adult routine eye examination checks your vision and also checks the health of your eyes. Here are some tests it involves.

Visual Acuity Test

You're probably familiar with this classic eye test. This is where you look at a chart on the wall some distance away from you and read letters in lines that get progressively smaller. This test allows the optometrist to rate your vision and determine how well you can see at a distance.

The test can also be done by reading the letters on a card you hold close to you to check how well you can see up close.

Muscle Test

The optometrist may have you follow their finger with your eyes as they move their finger back and forth slowly. By watching your eye movement, the optometrist can see how well your eye muscles work.

Eye Pressure Test

An adult routine eye examination also includes an eye pressure test. This is an important test because it can detect glaucoma early so you can begin treatment if you need it. Eye pressure can be tested by blowing a quick puff of air in your eyes, so your eyes don't have to be touched with an instrument.

Retina Examination

This part of the eye exam allows the optometrist to see the insides of your eye along with the retina by looking in your eye with a light and lens. You might receive eye drops before this test that cause your pupils to dilate so it's easier to see inside your eyes. This helps the doctor evaluate the health of your eyes and retina and to look for signs of eye diseases.

Peripheral Vision Testing

When you have certain eye conditions, you start losing your peripheral vision. This is an important test to have done, and it might be given to you on a computer or manually. On a computer, lights appear randomly on the screen while you look straight ahead. You hit a key every time you see a light. A manual test involves looking straight ahead and letting the doctor know when you see them move their finger into your field of vision.

An adult routine eye examination usually includes tests for visual acuity and eye pressure and screening for diseases. If the optometrist finds an abnormality, they may schedule you for more comprehensive testing.
