How is Lasik eye surgery done?

Lasik eye surgery is done in an outpatient setting and you can expect for the process to take less than an hour for both eyes. Eye drops will be put in your eyes and your eyelids will be gently, but firmly, held open by a device so you won't blink during the process.

A special laser tool will be used to create a flap above the cornea of your eye and the cornea underneath will be reshaped so it becomes the proper shape that will allow you to enjoy corrected vision. Once the cornea is reshaped, the flap will be set back in place.

Be sure you have someone with you to drive you home because you won't be able to drive until you are cleared to do so at your post-op appointment, which is generally set for the next day or so after having the procedure done.

Does it hurt to have the surgery done?

The drops that are put in your eyes will act as an anesthetic so you won't feel any discomfort during the process. In fact, the worst part of the process will be not being able to blink your eyes.

Is the recovery painful?

The drops will wear off a few minutes after the surgery and you may experience a little burning sensation. It's extremely important that you never, ever rub your eyes after Lasik eye surgery. You will be sent home with steroid, antibiotic and lubricating eye drops to help with the healing process.

You can also take an over-the-counter pain reliever for any irritation you do experience. You can also expect your eyes to water for the first day or so. You may be sent home with a shield that you will have to wear as instructed.

How long until you will experience your total corrected vision?

Your vision will be blurry and your eyes will be sensitive to light right after the procedure. However, you will start to notice your vision begin to get sharper and sharper as the days go on. The exact time frame it takes before you see your final results will vary from patient to patient.
